Screen Printing vs. DTF: Which Is Better For Your Aussie Business?

Choosing the right printing method for your brand is a big deal. You want quality. You want speed. You want value.
In the world of custom t-shirt printing, two heavyweights dominate the market: Screen Printing and Direct-to-Film (DTF). Both deliver incredible results, but they serve different needs for your business.
At So Boss, we specialise in both. We help Aussie businesses navigate these choices every day. Whether you are a Brisbane startup or a nationwide corporate team, getting the tech right saves you money and stress.
Design. Print. Profit.
What Is Traditional Screen Printing?
Screen printing is the "old school" gold standard. It involves creating a stencil (or screen) and pushing layers of ink through it onto the fabric surface. Each colour requires a separate screen.
It is a manual, artful process. It creates a bold, vibrant finish that sits slightly raised on the garment. When you think of high-end retail merchandise, you are likely thinking of screen printing.
Why choose screen printing?
Bulk Efficiency: The more you print, the cheaper it gets. It is the king of high-volume orders.
Vibrancy: The ink is thick and sits on top of the fabric, making colours "pop" against dark shirts.
Durability: Screen prints are legendary for their lifespan. They can outlast the shirt itself.
Specialty Inks: Want metallic, glow-in-the-dark, or neon? Screen printing is the way to go.
We recommend screen printing for orders of 50 units or more. It is perfect for local sports teams, large events, or uniform rollouts across Australia.

What Is DTF (Direct-to-Film) Printing?
Direct-to-Film is the modern disruptor. It is a digital process where the design is printed onto a special clear film. A unique adhesive powder is applied, and then the design is heat-pressed onto the clothing.
It bridges the gap between traditional printing and digital flexibility.
Why choose DTF?
No Minimums: Because there are no screens to set up, we can print a single shirt cost-effectively.
Unlimited Colours: Want a full-colour photo or a complex gradient? DTF handles it with ease.
Fine Detail: It captures tiny lines and intricate patterns that screen printing might struggle with.
Versatility: DTF works on almost any fabric, cotton, polyester, nylon, or even leather.
For the "Best Dad" or "The Legend" style gifts found in our Legend Tees collection, DTF allows for high-quality, personalised results without the bulk price tag.
The Showdown: Quality and Durability
Does it last? This is the question every business owner asks.
Screen Printing Durability: It is nearly indestructible. Because the ink is pushed deep into the fibres or sits as a solid layer, it handles heavy-duty washing. If you are ordering workwear for a construction crew, this is your best bet.
DTF Durability: Modern DTF technology has come a long way. The prints are flexible and surprisingly stretchy. They don’t crack easily. While they might eventually show wear after dozens of high-heat washes, they are perfect for promotional gear and fashion brands.

Does Your Order Size Determine the Method?
Yes. Volume is the biggest factor in your decision.
Small Orders (1–20 units)
If you only need a few shirts for a small team or a specific event, DTF is the winner. The setup time for screen printing makes small runs too expensive. We can get a DTF order moving almost instantly.

Medium to Bulk Orders (50+ units)
This is where screen printing Australia-wide becomes the most cost-effective solution. Once the screens are burnt and the ink is mixed, the per-unit cost drops significantly. For large-scale custom t-shirt printing, your budget will go much further here.
Which Method Handles Complex Designs Better?
Are you printing a simple one-colour logo? Or a full-blown artistic masterpiece?
Simple Logos: Screen printing handles solid blocks of colour better than anything else. The opacity is unmatched.
Photographic Designs: If your design has shadows, highlights, and thousands of different shades, screen printing becomes very expensive (because each colour needs a screen). DTF treats a photo like a regular digital print. It captures the soul of the image perfectly.
Think of a Dad Collage Tee. It requires photographic clarity. DTF makes this possible without a massive setup fee.

Fabric Compatibility: Can You Print on Anything?
Not all shirts are created equal.
Cotton: Both methods love 100% cotton. It is the gold standard for apparel printing.
Polyester/Sports Gear: Screen printing on poly requires "low-bleed" inks to prevent the shirt colour from seeping into the print. DTF handles polyester beautifully because the adhesive layer acts as a barrier.
Workwear: For heavy-duty hi-vis or thick canvas jackets, screen printing is often preferred for its ruggedness.
We pride ourselves on choosing the right tech for your specific fabric. We will never print a design using a method that won't hold up. That is part of our Guarantee.
The Logistics: Speed and Turnaround
How fast do you need it?
Screen printing takes time to set up. We have to coat screens, dry them, expose them to light, and wash them out before the first shirt is even touched.
DTF is much faster for "on-demand" needs. We can hit "print" on the digital file and have the transfer ready in minutes.
If you are in a rush in Brisbane or anywhere else in Australia, ask us about our same-day despatch options for digital prints. We move fast. You stay on schedule.

Common Questions About Aussie Apparel Printing
Is screen printing more expensive than DTF?
It depends on the quantity. For 1 shirt, screen printing is very expensive. For 1,000 shirts, screen printing is much cheaper than DTF.
Will the print peel off in the wash?
(We get this a lot.) The short answer is: No. Not if it’s done right. We use professional-grade heat presses and high-quality inks. We follow strict temperature and pressure guidelines to ensure a permanent bond. Check our Shipping and Care info for tips on keeping your prints fresh.
Can I mix and match methods in one order?
Absolutely. Many of our clients use screen printing for their bulk staff uniforms and DTF for their limited-edition promotional shirts. We are flexible.
Does DTF feel "plasticky"?
Traditional "iron-on" transfers felt like a sheet of plastic. Modern DTF is much thinner and softer. While it has a different "hand-feel" than screen printing, it is comfortable and breathable for everyday wear.
Summary: Which One Should You Pick?
Still undecided? Let's simplify it.
Choose Screen Printing if:
You have a large order (50+).
Your design has 1–3 solid colours.
You need maximum durability for workwear.
You want the lowest price per unit for bulk.
Choose DTF if:
You have a small or medium order.
Your design is full-colour or photographic.
You need a fast turnaround.
You are printing on synthetic or "tricky" fabrics.
