Why DTF Printing Will Change the Way You Order Custom Merchandise

Traditional printing is dead.
Well, maybe not dead, but it’s definitely looking over its shoulder. For years, if you wanted a custom shirt, you had two choices: cheap iron-ons that peeled after one wash or expensive screen printing that required you to buy 50 shirts you didn’t need.
Then came DTG (Direct to Garment). It changed the game for cotton. But what if you wanted a logo on a polyester gym shirt? What about a high-quality custom hoodie or a stubborn canvas bag?
Enter DTF. Direct to Film.
It is the technology that is currently flipping the merchandise industry upside down. It’s faster, more durable, and more versatile than almost anything that came before it. At So Boss, we’ve integrated DTF into our workflow because it solves the problems our customers hate most.
What exactly is DTF printing?
Think of it as a high-tech evolution of a transfer. But forget everything you know about those thick, plastic-feeling stickers from the 90s.
Direct to Film involves printing your design onto a special clear film using high-quality inkjet technology. While the ink is still wet, we apply a unique adhesive powder. The film is then cured in an oven. The result? A professional-grade, flexible heat transfer ready to be fused to a garment.
It sounds technical. It is. But for you, the process is simple.
Design. Upload. Receive.

Why should you care about the tech?
Because the tech dictates the quality. Have you ever ordered a shirt only for the logo to crack after three washes? That’s usually a result of poor ink bonding or low-quality vinyl.
DTF creates a bond that is incredibly resilient. The ink is literally fused into the fabric via a heat press, but the adhesive layer ensures it sits on top of the fibers just enough to remain vibrant.
It stretches. It breathes. It lasts.
Can it really print on anything?
Yes. That is the "magic" of DTF.
DTG printing is amazing (and we love it for same-day cotton orders), but it struggles with materials that aren't 100% cotton. Polyester, nylon, and treated fabrics usually repel DTG inks.
DTF doesn’t care about the fabric type.
Polyester Sports Gear: No problem.
Heavy Work Jackets: Done.
Headwear: Perfect.
Canvas Bags: Easy.
If you are looking to build a brand, you don’t just want t-shirts. You want a full range. You want your logo on caps, beanies, and windbreakers. DTF is the only technology that allows us to maintain the exact same color profile across all those different materials.

Is DTF better than DTG?
It’s not about "better." It’s about the right tool for the job.
If you are in Brisbane and you need a single 100% cotton tee for a party tonight, you want DTG. We offer same-day print and despatch for DTG orders placed before our 10am cut-off. It’s fast. It’s soft. It’s the king of cotton.
But DTF is the king of versatility.
While we don't offer same-day despatch for DTF (it takes a bit more time to cure and prep the films properly), it is the superior choice for high-impact colors and non-standard fabrics.
The Quick Comparison:
DTG: Best for 100% cotton, softest feel, same-day possible.
DTF: Best for polyester/blends, most vibrant colors, works on hats/hoodies/bags.
How durable are the prints?
Very. We’ve put our DTF prints through the ringer.
High-heat washes. Industrial dryers. Brutal sun exposure. The colors stay sharp. Because the adhesive is a specialized polymer, it has a high degree of elasticity. If you pull the shirt, the print pulls with it. It doesn’t snap or flake.
For business branding, this is vital. Your team represents your company. If their uniforms look faded and cracked after a month on the job, it reflects poorly on you. DTF ensures that "day one" look lasts for the life of the garment.
Does it support full-color designs?
Absolutely. One of the biggest hurdles with traditional printing is "color counting." In screen printing, every color in your logo costs extra money for a new screen.
With DTF, we don't count colors.
Whether your design has two colors or two thousand, the price is the same. We can print high-resolution photos, complex gradients, and neon-bright illustrations with pinpoint accuracy.
Dream. Create. Print.

Why is there no minimum order?
At So Boss, we believe "No MOQ" (Minimum Order Quantity) is a right, not a privilege.
Traditional shops turn away small businesses because the setup time for a single shirt isn't worth their effort. DTF changes the math. Because there are no screens to burn and no massive cleanup required between jobs, we can print one single high-quality transfer as easily as we can print fifty.
This empowers you to:
Test a design: Order one shirt, see how it looks, and then go big.
Personalise: Print individual names on a team set of hoodies.
Gift: Create a one-off custom masterpiece for a friend.

What about the "hand-feel"?
"Hand-feel" is the industry term for how the print feels when you rub your hand over it.
Early transfer technology felt like a thick sheet of plastic. It was sweaty and uncomfortable. DTF is significantly thinner. While you can "feel" the print more than you would with a DTG print (which sinks into the fabric), it is still incredibly soft and flexible.
On a long sleeve custom t-shirt, a DTF print feels premium. It has a slight matte finish that looks expensive. It doesn’t have that "cheap" gloss that often plagues lower-end transfers.

Is it environmentally friendly?
We are always looking for ways to improve our footprint. Our eco-friendly printing initiative is a big part of why we choose the machines we do.
DTF is surprisingly efficient. Because we can "gang" designs (fitting multiple orders onto a single roll of film), we minimize material waste. The inks are water-based, and because we only print exactly what you order, we aren't creating piles of unsold inventory that end up in landfills.
Order. Only. Essentials.
How do I prepare my artwork for DTF?
The better the file, the better the print.
For DTF, we recommend high-resolution PNG files with a transparent background. 300 DPI is the gold standard. Since the printer creates a white underbase automatically, your colors will pop regardless of whether you’re printing on a black, navy, or bone-colored shirt.
If you're unsure, just contact us. We help people move from "cool idea" to "finished product" every single day.
Why choose So Boss for your merch?
We aren't just a print shop. We are your brand partners.
We use premium blanks like AS Colour because we know that a great print on a bad shirt is a waste of money. When you combine the durability of DTF with the fit and finish of a high-end tee, you get something people actually want to wear.

Common Questions About DTF
Does it peel? Not if it’s applied correctly. We use industrial-grade heat presses with precise temperature and pressure controls to ensure the bond is permanent.
Is it expensive? For small to medium runs, it is often the most cost-effective way to get high-quality, full-color results.
Can I print on hats? Yes! DTF is our go-to for caps and headwear. It handles the curves and seams of a hat much better than other methods.
The Bottom Line
The world of custom merchandise is changing. You no longer have to settle for "good enough." You don't have to buy in bulk to get a professional look.
DTF printing has leveled the playing field. It gives the small business owner the same quality tools as the global fashion brands.
Stop settling for low-quality prints that wash away. Experience the vibrancy and durability of Direct to Film.
